Yukarı Mahalle is one of Akçakoca's oldest neighbourhoods. About 160 traditional houses in the protected area are 150–200 years old; some have been restored.
The houses fall into three types: single-storey houses, two-storey timber-framed (bağdadi) houses and later houses with large windows. Many have bay windows. According to research, the ground floors of these houses used to be shops.
The culture of the Manav Turks who live in the neighbourhood carries on today. At the Historic Yukarı Mahalle Market, held every Saturday and Sunday among the bay-windowed houses on Cumhuriyet Street, you can find melengüççeği, mancarlı pide, village bread and handicrafts.
Before you go
- People still live in most of the houses; respect their courtyards and windows.
- The Yukarı Mahalle Market is held on Saturdays and Sundays.
- Wear comfortable shoes; the streets are steep.
