The Karadeniz Ereğli Museum is in the Halil Paşa Mansion on Yalı Street by the sea, built in the late 19th century by Halil Paşa Karamahmutoğlu. Stones from ancient Roman buildings have been reused on the facade of this three-storey stone building with a basement.
On the ground floor there are gravestones, glassware, jewellery and coins; ethnographic items are displayed on the upper floors. The third floor is furnished like a traditional Ereğli home. The garden has column capitals, sarcophagi and funerary monuments.
In antiquity Ereğli, known as Herakleia Pontike, was one of the Black Sea's important port cities; the museum's collection tells this long history. It's about 40 minutes from Akçakoca along the coast road.
